Choosing Sunglasses and Glasses to Suit your Face Shape

It is worth thinking about your face shape when buying eyewear. Manufactures certainly do! They keep in mind different face sizes of individuals when making different shapes and designs. Eyewear needs to be in proportion to your face otherwise they can look odd. Whilst there are no set rules, there are a few categories that people generally fall into as follows:

Square Face

If your face is as long as it is wide with a deep forehead and a square jaw line, most frames will suit you. For men, large shapes such as aviators and teardrop sunglasses look good. For women you are best to choose a style of frame that are more rounded or oval and avoid slim, square or angular shapes that accentuate jaw line. Celebrities with this kind of face include Demi Moore, Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt and Elton John.

Oval Face

Characteristic of people with a face that is roughly equal to one and a half times its width, with high cheekbones and a gently curving jaw so that their forehead is slightly wider than their jaw. If your face fits within this category you will find that most frame shapes will suit your face shape. Just make sure the size is in proportion to your face (make sure the frames aren't wider than the widest part of your face).  Celebrities with this face shape include Julia Roberts, Eva Mendez, and Hugh Grant.

Round Face

Characteristic of people with a face that is as wide as it is long but fairly short in height with a wide forehead, with full cheeks and a rounded jaw line. It is best to choose frames which are smaller, wide and squarer in shape. Rounded faces look good in sunglasses which help to minimize their curves and adds softer and angular look to their face. You can select sunglasses which have brow bars that have the effect of pulling the eye slightly upward and make the face look much longer. Rimless designs also look good. Avoid big round frames that make your face look rounder. Celebrities with this face shape include Cameron Diaz, Kelly Clarkson and Denzel Washington

Triangular Face

Here your face is narrow toward your jawline and wider at the forehead and cheek bones giving you a refined chin and broad cheekbones. Choose a frame that is rounder or square but avoid a style that has a greater width at the top, as this will accentuate your face rather than enhancing your look. Celebrities with this face shape include Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Richard Branson and Reese Witherspoon

Rectangular Face

Your face will be longer than it is wide with high cheek bones and a deep forehead. Consider wider frames and styles with a heavier top. Strong looking large square frames can often balance a narrow looking face. Avoid small subtle shapes. Celebrities with this face shape include Lucy Liu and George Clooney.

Diamond Face

These are people with a slender jaw and forehead with high cheek bones and wide faces. Men will suit larger, bolder frames or the aviator style. Women will stand out in round or oval shaped eyewear which are designed to soften the face contours and make them look attractive and thinner. Softly curved frames also look good. The style looks best when they are wider on the top. Also consider oval, square and rimless frames. Celebrities with this face shape include Sophia Loren and Zac Efron.
