How to Choose a Prescription Package for Glasses

How to order prescription glasses online

At eyekit we have priced the frames and lenses separately so that you are not tied in to us if you would prefer to have your local optician provide your prescription lenses. However, most of our customers choose to buy glasses with their prescription lenses fitted.

If you require prescription frames just follow the steps below:

1. Choose a frame and click the prescription available button below the product image. 

This will show you all the prescription option available for your chosen frame as can be seen below. By clicking on the icons that meet your requirement it will narrow down your choice so that you can browse through the prescription packages at the bottom of the screen that are relevant to your need.

What type of lenses do I need?

It might seem there is a huge choice. That is because we offer many lens packages to meet demanding requirements for sports sunglasses and other specific needs in addition to fashion eyewear. The guide below will help you select the correct lens dependent on your requirement. If you require a prescription for glasses then you will only need to consider the first four icons within the section 'Type of lenses required'. They are as follows:

Lifestyle Lenses - Represents CR39 plastic lenses which are the most common lens material used in commercial spectacles today. If you have a small prescription, just click on this icon and it will narrow your choice. If you are only interested in having clear lenses then click 'clear' on the next row down that stated 'Clear or tinted lenses?' and it will bring your choice of packages down to a manageable number for you to browse through.

If you have a stronger prescription, you can still choose our lifestyle lens options, but the higher the prescription the thicker the lenses will become. To reduce the thickness you might want to consider one of the other options below.

Performance Lenses - Our performance are CR39 lenses that are aspheric. They are cut with a much improved surface profile that can reduce or eliminate optical distortions in the peripheral area of vision enhancing optical performance compared to simple lenses. They also reduce the edge thickness in minus prescriptions and make them lighter to wear for both plus and minus prescriptions. Recommended if your prescription is between 1 and 3 spheres.

Thin & Lite Lenses - These single vision resin lenses are thinner and lighter than the 'Lifestyle' lenses. This reduces the edge thickness in minus prescriptions and the centre thickness in plus prescriptions. This makes the lenses thinner and lighter to wear for both plus and minus prescriptions while maintaining their optical performance. Recommended for prescriptions where your prescription is between 2 and 4 spheres.

Super Thin & Lite - As the name implies, Super Thin & Lite single vision resin lenses are even thinner and lighter than the thin and light lenses. For higher minus prescriptions this reduces the edge thickness and for higher plus prescriptions it reduces  the centre thickness of the lens. This makes the lenses thinner and lighter to wear for both plus and minus prescriptions while maintaining their optical performance. Recommended for high prescriptions where your prescription is 4 spheres or over.

I need a tint in my glasses

If you require a tint in your prescription, you can select from the options above and click on the coloured tint you require displayed at the side of 'Clear or tinted lenses?' Some customers prefer their lenses to be tinted to allow only a certain percentage of light to go through. I.e. Instead of choosing a clear prescription for your chosen frame, you could incorporate a light tint (Cat.1). This can be very helpful if you are dyslexic or suffer eyestrain under certain lighting conditions.  Or alternatively, you might prefer a more substantial tint if you wish to convert them into sunglasses or for normal sunglasses (Cat.2 or Cat.3). Most standard sunglasses are Cat.3. When you select a package, you will be guided to select the amount of tint based on the EU category classification. For the exact light transmission provided within each category, click on the ‘more info’ tab below each package.

You might also want to consider other tint options that are are highlighted under 'Need a specific type of tint?'. Photochromic Lenses are becoming increasingly popular. These lenses get darker or lighter in accordance with the intensity of the light. For glasses you should consider photochromic lenses that start clear and get darker when you step outside. Others will start with a mild tint and get darker as the intensity of light from the sun increases. The Luminous Transmission Factor (LTF) which determines how much and how little light is allowed through the lens is summarised in brackets using the EU category classification. For example, (Cat.0-2) means the photochromic lens changes from category 0 (Clear) to category 2 dependent on the light conditions. If you require photochromic lenses, click on the photochromic icon to narrow the choice down to only photochromic options.

How do I choose bifocal glasses?

When selecting a prescription package check that a bifocal option is available by making sure it is listed on the key features on the packages on the slider bar. Then click the bifocal option when prompted. We will provide you with a distance and reading prescription. If you require a distance and intermediate prescription let us know when loading your prescription details in the dialogue box provided.

2. Browse through your selected packages and choose the one that meets your need.

The packages on the slider bar will provide you with a summary of the key features. If you need more information just click on the ‘more info’ tab and then add to basket.  You will then be guided through the login/registration process and asked to load your requirement/prescription.
